            Singapore Minstrel (2015)
10 years ago, I remember being a volunteer intern at the Asian American International Film Festival and facilitating the Q&A for Singapore Minstrel (right) when it was first premiering. I remember being quite taken by the film, a love letter via personal documentary, that also reflects the way we think about artistry and artmaking on our island that seems to respect neither. Of course art always finds a way, because expression will not be stopped. I'm looking forward to watching it again; it's my recommendation for the weekend, and a fitting watch for our national birthday!
Elsewhere, we also have the 20th anniversary screening for Singapore Dreaming showing at Oldham Theatre for more "nation-building" fare, complete with filmmaker/cast Q&As. ArtScience Cinema is showing a collection of shorts focused on the movement of the body by experimental filmmaker Maya Deren; while SFS Somerset and Filmhouse have both added a couple of new films to their slate, check them out below.
