Opening Speech with China's protagonist actress + 30mins Q&A after screening. At a school, two 9-year-old Chinese girls meet at the start of the school year. Everyone assumes they will become friends, but nothing connects them. Lucía is the daughter of immigrants, she feels Spanish, and she only thinks about fitting in with her other school friends. She wishes she had “normal” parents like her friends, but hers embarrass her because they don’t speak Spanish, work more than 14 hours in the bazaar, and don’t even let her celebrate her birthday at Burger King. The other girl is Xiang. She is adopted, and her face reveals wherever she goes that she is not her parents’ biological daughter. Xiang neither feels Chinese nor accepted by the other children at school. The two girls will meet, separate, and end up being vital to each other in their search for their identity.
