An elderly widower preparing to migrate finds himself increasingly reluctant to part with his vintage Mercedes sedan.
Following his wife’s passing, Hock begins to relinquish his possessions to join his son in Canada. Estranged from his daughter and distant from his friends, his sole attachment is to his car, around which his life revolves. Between aimlessly washing it and driving to meet potential buyers – only to reject every offer – memories of his once-happy family return to him with intensity. When an unexpected delay to his move triggers an existential crisis over his failures as a husband and father, a chance encounter with June, a prospective buyer, forces Hock to re-evaluate his priorities.
The Old Man & His Car is a portrait of a lonely old man whose self-absorption is disrupted by the kindness of strangers, affirming the need for connection and community beyond the nuclear family. Melding Super 8 home movie footage from director Michael Kam’s personal archives and scenes of dilapidated pockets of Singapore, the film is a meditation on the courage it takes to stay present in the moment.
