Lucrecia Martel | Argentina, US, Mexico, France, Netherlands, Denmark | 2025 | 119 min | NC16 (Some Coarse Language) The nine-year battle to bring to trial the murderers of an Indigenous leader in Argentina exposes the colonial legacy that enabled them. In October 2009, Javier Chocobar, a Chuschagasta Indigenous community leader in northern Argentina, was gunned down by the local landowner and two former police officers when he tried to defend himself and his people from being forcibly evicted from his community’s ancestral land. Despite the murder being captured on video, it took nine years of protests before the culprits were brought to trial. By alternating between tense courtroom footage, breathtaking views of the stolen land and vestiges of Chocobar and his fellow Chuchagasta people, Martel exposes the injustices rooted in Argentina’s centuries-old colonial past and pays cinematic tribute to the community’s resistance against systemic erasure.
