About the Panel — 'Dreaming Her: Exploring Womanhood in Creative Practice' with Leong Puiyee, Marylyn Tan and Nurul Atiqah Zaidi
Using PAPRIKA as a springboard, this fireside-style conversation explores how creative works influence perceptions of femininity and identity across mediums. Speakers reflect on their own practices, the responsibilities of representing womanhood, and the impact these portrayals may have. Moderated by lead curator Phyllis Chan.
Leong Puiyee: Leong Puiyee is a film programmer and arts manager. She has managed projects and film programmes throughout her career, including being on the pre-selection jury for Asia Project Market, Busan International Film Festival. She is currently the Programme Head (Film) at Objectifs Centre for Photography and Film in Singapore.
Marylyn Tan: Marylyn Tan is a writer, artist and menace. Fair of verse and foul of mouth, she has built her body of work on working with the body. She subverts shame to reclaim power and emancipate the endangered. She loves the connection between the unlikely. Her first book, GAZE BACK (Lambda loser), made her the first woman in history to win the Singapore Literature Prize for Poetry.
Nurul Atiqah Zaidi: Nurul Atiqah Zaidi is a Singaporean interdisciplinary performance artist working through embodied research, positioning performance as an epistemic methodology. Her practice examines fetish as a technology of power and reclaims movement as counter-gesture. She has presented internationally and is currently completing a BA (Hons) in Fine Arts at NAFA, where she develops performance as a feminist mode of knowledge production.
Synopsis
Paprika (2006)
Dr. Atsuko Chiba works as a scientist by day and, under the code name "Paprika," is a dream detective at night. Atsuko and her colleagues are working on a device called the DC Mini, which is intended to help psychiatric patients, but in the wrong hands it could destroy people's minds. When a prototype is stolen, Atsuko/Paprika springs into action to recover it before damage is done. This cult favourite celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.
