Join us for a screening of Palme d'Or winner TITANE! THIS EVENT IS FREE SEATING. About the Showcase — Aestheticised: Style as a Feminist Language Is there really a “feminist aesthetic”? Sometimes, words are not needed to tell a story. Style is not mere decoration: colour, costume, and design come together to construct heightened visual worlds that give form to women’s desire and resistance. Turning away from a realism that has historically confined women, these films treat beauty as a site of tension where questions of gender and power are staged. Whether posh or minimalist, their aesthetics move beneath the surface to challenge how women are seen, represented, and imagined on screen. Aestheticised encourages audiences to watch with an eye for form. By placing radically different styles side by side, the programme suggests that feminist aesthetics are plural, fluid, and continually evolving. They are united not by a single look, but by a shared desire to reimagine how women can be portrayed on screen.

Titane (2021)

The first film directed by a woman to win a solo Palme d'Or in the history of Cannes, Julia Ducournau's TITANE is extraordinary, original and path-breaking. A serial killing car model falls pregnant to a Cadillac before impersonating the long-missing son of a steroid-addicted firefighter. In this thrillingly violent body horror, visual style becomes a vehicle for dismantling conventional ideas of femininity and desire. An audacious and deeply vulnerable story about trauma, family and the warped ways of love.
