Partnering with Swee Lee, Weekend Culture's July edition celebrates the people, places and everyday sounds that make Singapore feel like home. Join us for a screening of Tan Pin Pin's Singapore GaGa (2005), an affectionate and witty portrait of the rhythms and quirks that shape our island.
The fun doesn't stop after the credits roll! Gather your friends for a post-screening trivia night packed with questions on the film and Singaporean culture, and come dressed as your favourite Singapore icon—from the legendary YP on a PMD to the MRT auntie watching Facebook reels at full volume—for a chance to win a complimentary round of drinks.

About the Curators
Phyllis Chan (Curator)
Phyllis Chan is a writer-curator and a final-year English Literature and Art History student at Nanyang Technological University. She was the co-curator of the Substation exhibition Between Lands: Migration as Transformation, as part of the Sub+ Youth Curators Programme. As a writer, she has contributed essays to Correspondence and NTU Film Society’s Exposure, with her work in Exposure also featured in the Asian Film Archive’s Asian Cinema Digest.
Adeleena Araib (Mentor)
Adeleena is an arts professional with experience in independent cinema and cultural programming. Formerly Senior Programmes & Partnerships Manager at The Projector, she worked across film programming, strategic partnerships and venue operations. Prior to cinema, she worked in publishing and the literary arts at Ethos Books. She especially enjoys working with spaces and communities, and looks forward to mentoring emerging curators and supporting independent and alternative programming initiatives.
About Weekend Culture
Weekend Culture is a recurring cultural weekender that brings film, music and visual arts together into community-centred experiences. Weekend Culture is designed to broaden access and deepen human connection in order to expand Singapore’s cultural fabric. The programme functions as a third space in time, creating experiential cultural moments where people gather, linger and immerse in creative expression together.

Synopsis
Singapore GaGa (2005)
Singapore GaGa is a paean to the quirkiness of the Singaporean aural landscape. It reveals Singapore’s past and present with a delight and humour that makes it a necessary film for all Singaporeans. We hear buskers, street vendors, school cheerleaders sing hymns to themselves and to their communities. From these vocabularies (including Arabic, Latin, Hainanese), a sense of what it might mean to be a modern Singaporean emerges.
