Love Letter (1995)

It has been two years since Hiroko Watanabe (played by Miho Nakayama), who lives in Kobe, lost her fiancé, Itsuki Fujii, in a tragic mountain accident. On her way home from attending the memorial service marking the second anniversary of his death, Hiroko visits Itsuki’s family home. There, she discovers his old junior high school yearbook and finds an address in Otaru—where he once lived. Unable to let go of her lingering feelings, she decides to send a letter to that address, as if writing to him in heaven.

To her surprise, a reply comes back—something that should have been impossible. Hiroko soon learns that there is a woman in Otaru who shares the exact same name as her late fiancé and who was once his classmate in junior high school. Hiroko’s love and the other Itsuki’s love— One love letter unearths two long-buried romances. Set in the snowy town of Otaru, LOVE LETTER is a poignant and pure love story starring Miho Nakayama and Etsushi Toyokawa. Nakayama takes on the challenging dual roles of Hiroko Watanabe and the female Itsuki Fujii with heartfelt depth.
